Benefits of registering in an Online Business Directory

Getting your company registered in an on-line business directory increases your chances of getting noticed in the marketplace. With Internet being the most-widely used communication medium for businesses, registering in an online business directory can be increasingly beneficial to the local businesses as well.

With economy rapidly escalating, every business man wishes that his or her business also prospers and soars higher. To achieve this, people employ different strategies. While some people believe in distributing pamphlets, cards and opt for other promotional services and products, some businesses merely get them registered in a good online business directory.

The main advantages of getting registered in an online business directory are:

• It endows you with high-visibility as opposed to your competitors who may still believe in traditional methods to promote their business like yellow pages and newspapers.

• It helps build up relationships with buyers, customers and clients

• You can even attract buyers of competitors, as your company will be much more visible and updated.

• You can always be in the mind of your customers by launching special coupons and special promotional campaigns.

• There are no limitations in terms of quality of the content that you can incorporate in the business directory.

• You can even upload product pictures, menu and service records together with business URL.

• You can even insert your business directory’s website on your business cards, which will make it easy for customers to approach you.

• You could even keep potential customers updated on new products, business hours, special hours and discounts.

• A business directory reportedly submits your company’s internet page to other search engine sites as well and this helps attract and grow traffic.

• As more and more customers are accessing the internet to satisfy their requirements, it becomes easy to locate your company and seek services if you have registered in an online business directory.

The most remarkable aspect of online business directories is that your business will keep progressing sans any glitches, as you will come in contact with large customers, both from India and the outside world. And be rest assured once you get your self registered in an online business directory, your sales will climb up immensely and you can look forward to catering to the needs of your clients in a proper fashion.

Mental Retardation

Mental retardation is a condition diagnosed before age 18 that includes below-average general intellectual function, and a lack of the skills necessary for daily living.

Reference from A.D.A.M.

Causes
Mental retardation affects about 1 - 3% of the population. There are many causes of mental retardation, but doctors find a specific reason in only 25% of cases.
A family may suspect mental retardation if the child's motor skills, language skills, and self-help skills do not seem to be developing, or are developing at a far slower rate than the child's peers. Failure to adapt (adjust to new situations) normally and grow intellectually may become apparent early in a child's life. In the case of mild retardation, these failures may not become recognizable until school age or later.
An assessment of age-appropriate adaptive behaviors can be made using developmental screening tests. The failure to achieve developmental milestones suggests mental retardation.
The degree of impairment from mental retardation varies widely, from profoundly impaired to mild or borderline retardation. Less emphasis is now placed on the degree of retardation and more on the amount of intervention and care needed for daily life.
Risk factors are related to the causes. Causes of mental retardation can be roughly broken down into several categories:
• Infections (present at birth or occurring after birth)
o Congenital CMV
o Congenital rubella
o Congenital toxoplasmosis
o Encephalitis
o HIV infection
o Listeriosis
o Meningitis
• Chromosomal abnormalities
o Chromosome deletions (cri du chat syndrome)
o Chromosomal translocations (a gene is located in an unusual spot on a chromosome, or located on a different chromosome than usual)
o Defects in the chromosome or chromosomal inheritance (for example, fragile X syndrome, Angelman syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome)
o Errors of chromosome numbers (such as Down syndrome)
• Environmental
o Deprivation syndrome
• Genetic abnormalities and inherited metabolic disorders
o Adrenoleukodystrophy
o Galactosemia
o Hunter syndrome
o Hurler syndrome
o Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
o Phenylketonuria
o Rett syndrome
o Sanfilippo syndrome
o Tay-Sachs disease
o Tuberous sclerosis
• Metabolic
o Congenital hypothyroid
o Hypoglycemia (poorly regulated diabetes mellitus)
o Reye syndrome
o Hyperbilirubinemia (very high bilirubin levels in babies)
• Nutritional
o Malnutrition
• Toxic
o Intrauterine exposure to alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, and other drugs
o Lead poisoning
o Methylmercury poisoning
• Trauma (before and after birth)
o Intracranial hemorrhage before or after birth
o Lack of oxygen to the brain before, during, or after birth
o Severe head injury
• Unexplained (this largest category is for unexplained occurrences of mental retardation)
Symptoms
• Continued infantile behavior
• Decreased learning ability
• Failure to meet intellectual developmental markers
• Inability to meet educational demands at school
• Lack of curiosity
Note: Changes to normal behaviors depend on the severity of the condition. Mild retardation may be associated with a lack of curiosity and quiet behavior. Severe mental retardation is associated with infantile behavior throughout life.
Exams and Tests
• Abnormal Denver developmental screening test
• Adaptive behavior score below average
• Development way below that of peers
• Intelligence quotient (IQ) score below 70 on a standardized IQ test
Treatment
The primary goal of treatment is to develop the person's potential to the fullest. Special education and training may begin as early as infancy. This includes social skills to help the person function as normally as possible.
It is important for a specialist to evaluate the person for other affective disorders and treat those disorders. Behavioral approaches are important for people with mental retardation.
Outlook (Prognosis)
The outcome depends on:
• Opportunities
• Other conditions
• Personal motivation
• Treatment
Many people lead productive lives and function on their own; others need a structured environment to be most successful.
Possible Complications
Complications vary. They may include:
• Inability to care for self
• Inability to interact with others appropriately
• Social isolation
When to Contact a Medical Professional
Call your health care provider if:
• You have any concerns about your child's development
• You notice that your child's motor or language skills are not developing normally
• Your child has other disorders that need treatment

Prevention
Genetic: Prenatal screening for genetic defects and genetic counseling for families at risk for known heritable disorders can decrease the incidence of genetically caused mental retardation.
Social: Government programs to ensure adequate nutrition are available to the underprivileged in the first and most critical years of life. These programs can reduce retardation associated with malnutrition. Early intervention in situations involving abuse and deprivation will also help.
Toxic: Environmental programs to reduce exposure to lead, mercury, and other toxins will reduce toxin-associated retardation. However, the benefits may take years to become apparent. Increased public awareness of the risks of alcohol and drugs during pregnancy can help reduce the incidence of retardation.
Infectious: The prevention of congenital rubella syndrome is probably one of the best examples of a successful program to prevent one form of mental retardation. Constant vigilance, such as limiting exposure to cat litter that can cause toxoplasmosis during pregnancy, helps reduce retardation that results from this infection.

Fat and Cholesterol

Fats provide the body’s most concentrated source of energy. They also supply
essential fatty acids required for good health and enable you to absorb certain vitamins (A, D,
E, and K). However, most of us tend to consume too much fat since it can be found in many
foods.
“Visible” fats account for half of all the fats we eat, such as butter, cream, oil and salad
dressings. The rest we cannot see—the fat in a well-marbled meat, eggs, liver, coconut, milk,
luncheon meat and cheese. These “invisible” fats are also found in our favorite goodies, such
as ice cream, cookies, pastries and crackers.
There are three basic types of fats: Monounsaturated fats, saturated fats, and
polyunsaturated fats.
Monounsaturated fats have little effect on blood cholesterol levels. They neither
increase or decrease it. Olive and peanut oils are high in monounsaturated fats.
Saturated fats are usually fats of animal origin and are solid at room temperature.
These fats may tend to increase blood cholesterol levels. Fats in meat and dairy fats are highly
saturated. A few vegetable sources such as coconut and coconut oil, palm oil and cocoa butter
(found in chocolate) contain high amounts of saturated fats.
Polyunsaturated fats are usually fats of plant origin and are liquid at room
temperature. These fats help decrease the cholesterol level in your blood. Vegetable oils vary
in the degree of unsaturation, with safflower oil being the highest in polyunsaturates. Other
polyunsaturated vegetable oils are sunflower, corn, cottonseed, soy and sesame seed.
Remember, not all vegetable oils are high in polyunsaturated fats: for example, olive, peanut,
coconut and palm oils are not. Hydrogenated fats are liquid oils which have been chemically
changed into more saturated solid fats, such as shortening or some margarines.
All fats and oils are equally high in calories. For healthy Americans it is recommended
that the total not exceed 30-35 percent of calories with saturated, monounsaturated and
polysaturated. That means the average individual should limit the total amount and increase
polyunsaturates.
Type of Oil or Fat Percent Poly- Percent Mono- Percent
unsaturated unsaturated Saturated
Safflower Oil 74 17 9
Sunflower Oil 64 26 10
Corn Oil 58 29 13
Average Vegetable Oil
(Soybean & Cottonseed) 40 47 13
Peanut Oil 30 51 19
Chicken Fat (Schmaltz) 26 45 29
Olive Oil 9 77 14
Average Vegetable
Shortening 20 48 32
Lard 12 48 40
Beef Fat 4 48 48
Butter 4 35 61
Palm Oil 2 17 82
Coconut Oil 2 12 86
Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a fat-like substance manufactured naturally by the body. It is also
present in foods we eat. The main dietary sources of cholesterol are foods of animal origin
such as cream, butter, most cheese and egg yolk. A limited amount of cholesterol is important
for the regulation of certain body functions, but high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream
may form fatty deposits in the arteries. These deposits may slow or block the flow of blood
through the body, resulting in a heart attack or stroke.
Studies indicate that cholesterol in the bloodstream can be lowered by controlling the
amounts and types of fat we eat. It is suggested that we consume 300 mg or less per day.
Scientists cannot say for sure that lowering your blood cholesterol by eating less
saturated fats and cholesterol will prevent or delay heart disease, but many believe that is does
help. Eating less total fat is a safe way to reduce calories and cholesterol consumption. And
losing weight can reduce the effects of other heart disease risk factors and improve your
overall health.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
The consumption of a specific type of polyunsaturated fat, omega-3 fatty acids, has
recently been thought to be beneficial in preventing coronary heart disease. Fairly high levels
are found in fish. Frequent consumption of fish (two times/week) is recommended although
supplements of omega-3 fatty acids are not recommended based on current research findings.
If you want to reduce saturated fat, cholesterol and calories in your family meals, here
are some suggestions:
1. Choose lean meat, fish, poultry, dry beans and peas as your protein sources.
2. Moderate your use of eggs and organ meats (such as liver).
3. Limit your intake of butter, cream, hydrogenated margarines, shortenings, and
coconut oil, and foods made from such products.
4. Trim excess fat off meats.
5. Broil, bake or boil rather than fry in preparing foods.
6. Read labels carefully to determine both amount and types of fat contained in foods.
